A Dino-Encounter

Two years ago a local homeschool group brought Pastor Paul Veit to do a talk for us. It was a  lot of fun but B13 was really the only one old to really get anything out of the talk. This time I think N8 had fun and we all enjoyed the fact that it was on a Saturday and Daddy went with us.

Hubby & I were up way too late last night so I wasn't even sure we'd make the 10am talk this morning. It was geared for ages younger elementary so that was the one I really wanted to attend as I thought it would be best aimed at the younger boys. Much to my surprise hubby was up by 8am (we never made it to bed until 1am!) and we made it to the 10am talk.

Pastor Veit (aka the Dino Pastor) is very engaging to listen to.  He is knowledgeable and passionate about what he knows. He loves to share his knowledge with children and parents a like. This particular talk was similar to what he did two years ago but still a lot of new information was in there. He discussed the Five F's of creation: Formed, Fallen, Flood, Faded, and Formed.

What made it really fun for us was that he singled out my hubby throughout the morning talk. When we first arrived Pastor Veit was in the lobby greeting people. He actually remembered meeting hubby at the homeschool convention last year. They chatted a bit and he asked for hubby's name as a reminder. He used it a lot after that. My hubby soon became a judge for the "dino-roaring contest." He did well though. My boys were loving having Daddy with us on a field trip and having him singled out. Then again, so did my hubby.

After the morning talk, Pastor Veit had brought along some games that were set up in the basement. We spent about thirty minutes down there so the kids could play. He had recruited parents to run them. My boys had fun with these.

In fact, hubby enjoyed the morning talk so much that he wanted to stay for the 1pm talk. We went out to lunch with some friends and then headed back to the church to listen to the second talk. It was great since it was a more in depth look at carbon dating, how the Grand Canyon was formed, and the ark. He also discussed a lot of how findings are changed to match what evolutionist would like. My favorite was actually about the Grand Canyon. Have you ever really looked at the Grand Canyon?

As Pastor Veit explained, there are really only two explanations for all the layers visible in the canyon. The prevailing one by geologists is that there were mountains and valleys formed over millions of years. They left behind sediment and that's how it was formed - basically. However, did you notice how straight the lines of sediment really are? What could have done that? Not mountains and valleys forming over million of years. It would be all up and down and all over the place. What about a world wide flood that laid down sediment fast?

Pastor Veit always brings some of his fossil samples when he comes to talks. There are far more at his museum, but it's still fun to see the ones he brings.

It really was a great way to spend the day together as a family.

  1. This sounds so fun! Hope I get to go some year! It is awesome that "hubby" got to go. You wrote that the mountains and hills laid down "sentiment" instead of sediment. If you decide to fix it, feel free to delete my comment, but I think it's way more poetic having the mountains lay down sentiment! Doesn't that sound cool? : )

  3. Man, having an English teacher read my posts just upped the ante I think. ;-) Thanks for pointing that out, Robin. Off to fix it.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
