Book Review: Say Goodbye by Turansky & Miller

I'm going to preface this review with this...I have a REALLY hard time reading non-fiction books. Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with me. LOL

I started this book way back in October. I first heard about in an on-line book club I was a part of then. It's been on my list on the right side of my blog since as "currently being read." I'm not THAT slow a reader, but I did start & stop it quite often.

I finally made a push this morning to finish it so I can cross it off my Summer Challenge list. Got to love a challenge to get through books.

I have to say that I did like this book. I like the concept presented, it's not something I've normally seen set out so well in a parenting book.

Turansky & Miller share that honor is the most important thing a parent can teach their child. Respect follows. They share many stories of families who teach their children in the manner they share in their book. The one I chuckled over the most was near the end. It was about a school counselor who called & was suggesting the daughter in the family needed counseling. When questioned why, he simply said he wasn't sure, but she was just too respectful to adults in the school & fellow students so she MUST be up to something. Quite a sad commentary on our society I think.

Overall I did like it. There looks to be some great activities in the back that you can do as a family to help increase your children's awareness of honoring each other & their family members, friends, & people in general. They have a lot of good concepts - including "The Wise Appeal" in where children are taught how to negotiate chores & such - but in a way that does not involve foot stomping, whining, or complaining - got to love that title.

I'm actually thinking of going back through the first part again to read the ways they suggest in teaching your child honor. I would definitely give this a "must read" rating.

  1. Thanks for the review. I don't want to blame the weather on a few recent attitudes here, but I really think it has something to do with the increase in complaining and laziness in all of us. It's TOO HOT to do ANYTHING! Anyway.. I think I'll see if the library has this book. I'm getting better at using the library these days... I can't keep BUYING books you know!

  2. This is my all time favorite parenting book. We've done the candy/dirt exercise a few times over the years, and we focus on some Bible verses that reinforce honor and just being NICE to others.

I like that honor will cover EVERY thing.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
