It may be hard to see in this photo, but the egg to the far left fits in the palm of my hand. It's HUGE! The one is the middle is from a chicken who has been laying for at least a month. The one on the right is from a chicken who has just started laying. The egg on the left is so large it won't even fit in an egg carton & my cartons are for "large" eggs.
Here are some photos with a ruler to put it all in perspective....
Small egg - from new layer
Medium egg - from a chicken who has been laying for a few weeks
Super-sized egg!
It's always exciting (egg-citing?) to find an egg in the nesting box. The boys don't mind running up multiple times a day to check. We've lost a few to the cold but hubby managed to salvage them. We put the frozen ones in the freezer to keep them frozen. Then this weekend he hardboiled them & made egg salad. He said it wasn't fantastic egg salad but it was pretty good. I was just afraid the frozen eggs would explode while boiling but thankfully they didn't.
We are still really enjoying our chickens. They are a lot of fun. The most enjoyment I have is feeding them grapes. They are a riot to watch playing "keep away" with them.
WOW! That IS huge. Thanks for the comparison.
ReplyDeleteVery nice! It seems one of your chickens plans on being a record breaker! haha :o)
ReplyDeleteWow! That's some big egg...maybe she is part ostrich. Yes, very egg-citing(giggles).
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Christmas!
