Friday's Fave Five

1. Singing with one of the worship teams at my church. I've always sang. I remember doing dishes with my big sister and the two of us would be belting out old Broadway tunes. Music has always been a big part of who I am. I began singing in the school choir in fifth grade and continued all the way through high school. I stopped a lot of music things once I left high school - a big regret on my part. I used to play the piano and clarinet and even had a one year stint playing the trombone. I sang in choirs, but then I stopped. I just didn't make time for it. I did have a couple years when B13 and N8 were very little (I was pregnant with N8) when I sang in a large community church choir and I loved it. We did specials for Easter and Christmas. There were about 100 people in the choir. We traveled around singing at various churches and even at some of the local malls. All this to say - I love to sing and I love music. Just this year I began doing special music for church. It's the first time I have ever sang a solo - EVER! It was nerve-wracking but fun. Now I sing with one of the two worship teams for our church. I love getting up there on Sunday morning and helping to lead the songs. I love practice. I just love to sing.

2. A great endocrinologist office. I was diagnosed with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes when I was 28 years old. It's been a long few years since then and I've had my diabetes under much better control than it is lately. I went to see the nurse practitioner that works with my endocrinologist and she had the fun part of telling me just how out of control my diabetes has become in the last three months. My numbers - except when pregnant - have never been where they really need to be. I've flirted with it being just a bit too high. Now it's really high - too high. My three month average is just not acceptable. So I'm thankful for the wake-up call. For the last three days I've been doing a better job of writing down what I eat, counting my carbs, and taking my insulin as I should be and my blood sugar numbers are so much better. It was definitely the wake-up call I needed.

3. A great sister who is also my best friend. My older sister is five years older than I am. We've always gotten along well but growing up she felt more like a mother to me than a sister. She would agree with this too by the way. Then about 15 or so years ago she moved back to Maine and we began growing a relationship not only based on the same blood flowing through our veins but also on friendship. She really is one of my best friends. She even sent me a card this week telling me just that.

4. Field Trips The best part of homeschooling is all the field trips we get to take. As of right now (from August until January), the boys and I have gone on thirteen field trips. We just went to the Maine State Museum this week. It's one of my favorites since there is so much to learn and it's free admission for educators including homeschoolers.

I have two very exciting ones coming up next month. B13 knows what they are, but I won't be telling the younger two until the day before we leave. I  have the chance to meet some "loopie" friends (i.e. Yahoo group buddies) in Boston. We'll be spending the day at the Boston Museum of Science. The next day our friends who are letting us crash at their place have offered to take us to the Higgins Armory Museum. It looks like a lot of fun! I know that my boys are going to have a great time and so will I.

5. Chatting online with friends. I love to chat online with friends. I have a relatively local friend and we actually met online and started getting to know each other through Google Chat. I love chatting with Kerry. It's always a blast! I also love chatting it up with my friend Deb. Deb and I first met via a "Flat Stanley" project a long time ago. I think B13 was only about six or seven at the time. I know that J6 hadn't made an appearance yet and N8 was still an infant I think. One thing let to another and we've stayed friends all this time. She's come to Maine to visit and we've all gone to New York to see her family as well. We used to have a set chat time but got out of the habit. We've started it back up this week and nice to look forward to.

  4. Well done for singing those solos. What were they, Lisa? I did 'The Lord is gracious and compassionate' during communion last week and I was terrified the whole way through!

Your writing about your sister was lovely. I'm so glad you have another sort of mother figure in your life!

  5. I love to sing, too! Isn't it a great feeling?

We visited a transportation museum in Maine with our four boys several years ago, and they loved it! I think it was in Bangor.

How great that you have a close sister relationship. They're not all like that, you know. Wish my sister were closer geographically.

Have you been to Outnumbered Mom for some mom inspiration and encouragement? Come on over!

    Happy weekend to you!

  6. My sis is one of my best friends too. And that didn't happen until we were both parents. Now I don't know what I would do without her.

Way to go for being brave and doing those solos. Loved how your wrote #1. Your love of singing is very evident.

  7. Lisa,

I saw your blog in a comment for "Choosing Joy." I have a son who has been a Type I diabetic for 25 years. He has had no complications to this point. He was 13 when diagnosed and our focus has always been to keep him as healthy as possible. It changed our lives, but certainly did not rule our lives. He is now married and has six children. He and his wife are part of a mission organization and live on support.

I'm glad you have a good endocrinologist. Do you by any chance have an insulin pump? My son found that it made control much easier. He still eats healthy and tests his blood sugar several times a day. I hope you are able to get better control. I will keep you in my prayers and would love to talk to you via email, if you would like.

i love the pictures of your boys. I also have three and one daughter. The son mentioned above has four boys ages 8-4 and two girls, 11 and 10.

    Take care.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
