{TOS Crew Review} K5 Learning

My kids are like most in this day and age - they love technology. Any time they have a reason to be on the computer playing games, they jump at it. I like it when I can use that enthusiasm to bring in some learning.

K5 Learning is an online program designed to supplement learning. It covers both math and reading using four different programs. Just as the name suggests, it is meant to be used with children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

The online reading curriculum covers five key areas including:

As a parent, these are all things that I teach my boys when they are beginning to read. They are basic skills that build the foundation for becoming a great reader. I like that they are included in K5.

Just as with the reading portion, there are five key areas covered in the online math curriculum section as well. These include:
In addition to teaching the basics in reading and math, there are two more learning sections. The online spelling and vocabulary section uses an "adaptive-test-study" approach with over 150,000 words in the database. Words are generated based on the student's grade level, past quizzes, and specific goals. Parents can also customize lists by inputting their own set of words. For older students, this section of the website instead begins teaching them vocabulary.

Lastly, K5 helps a student learn math facts online. One thing that I have worked hard to do is teach my boys their math facts. As the foundation to learning math, it's an essential skill. However, it can also be repetitious and boring. Making it fun and interactive, helps it be more enjoyable for them (and for me). K5 Math Facts measures your child's mastery of their facts and tracks the ones they've learned as well as the ones they still need to work on.

K5 offers a free 14-day trial (no credit card required). This is a great way to try out the program to see if it would fit a need you may have in your child's learning. K5 can be purchased at either a monthly rate ($25 for the first child and $15 for each additional child) or at a yearly rate ($199 for the first child and $129 for each additional child). A free reading and/or math assessment can be requested for each child as well, even during the free trial period. This helps K5 personalize the information that they will be learning based on your child's own skills.

Overall I felt this was a good program. I like how it adapted the skills taught directly to the child. As a homeschooler, my children don't fit in to the "grade mold" and for some skills they will be above, below, or spot on for that grade. A program that changes as their skill does, is nice to see.

My kids enjoyed this program. I had both my youngest son (approximately second grade) and my middle son (approximately fifth grade) try it out. As I mentioned earlier, my kids love having a chance to use the computer for school. In fact, for the last few weeks I have had a number of outside obligations come up and I have been using this quite a bit with my youngest son. It's been nice knowing that he could work on this independently on the mornings I wasn't home.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
