Misfits Market

Misfits Market

The name alone caught my eye. I've been seeing ads on Facebook for something called "Misfits Market." It looked interesting but not enough to really make me look further. And then I had a couple of local friends order boxes and start sharing how much they liked it!

As the name implies, the company is dedicated, as they say, to ending food waste. The food they sell are items that cannot be sold in stores - for whatever reason. Most often it is simply due to what the food looks like - it isn't "pretty enough."

Based on what my friends liked about it, I decided to give it a try. Using one of my friends referral codes, I ordered my first box. The referral code gives you 25% off your first order. I opted for the smaller box, the Mischief size, since I'm not cooking a lot nor do most of my family eat fruits and veggies. Yes, I know, that's another battle for another day. (My referral code is at the end of this post...hint...hint...hint...)

The photo above is what I received - all for just under $20 - and all organic.

onions, mangoes, and red potatoes

lots of small multi-colored peppers

head of romaine lettuce, bunch of radishes

head of cauliflower, squash, zucchini

I did receive three peaches in the box. One came already going bad and the other two went bad within just a couple of days of receiving them. I have found peaches to be a little like avocados in there regard to when they are ripe. My hubby has already eaten some of the peppers and loved them. I'm planning to use some of the other produce for meals this week.

Misfits Market offers a one time purchase or a subscription. I opted to do a subscription and have it delivered every two weeks. I do not enjoy gardening and this is a quick and easy way to ensure that we have some good fruits and veggies on hand for meals.

The food is shipped in a box lined with plastic covered Styrofoam - essentially making a regular cardboard box into a cooler. Most of the food is loose in the box. You can see in the photos that some were contained in bags. There were also two reusable cold packs included. This shipped very quickly to me via UPS. The day I ordered it, it was out for shipping and I received it two days later.

If you are interested in trying out your own box, here is my referral code: http://misfitsmarket.refr.cc/lisaberry You can click on that to receive 25% off your first order. I do receive a small kickback for you using it - it's a win-win!

Disclaimer: I ordered through Misfits Market all on my own. I received nothing in exchange for this review. I just really liked the service they offer so I wanted to share about it.

{Review} Cashmere Writing Gloves

Late last year I was given the opportunity to do a review of products on a website called Literary Book Gifts. I loved what I saw on there so when I was given the chance to review their new writing gloves, I jumped at the chance.

I live in Maine where winters can be rather cold. We heat with oil which is efficient but often leaves the house a bit chilly as we keep the thermostat a bit lower because of the cost of oil. This means that often while I'm working on my computer or my phone or my tablet, my hands are just simply cold! I type fast but it's never fast enough to keep my fingers warm.

These gloves, however, are perfect. They cover everything but the ends of my fingers. There is even a hole for my thumb to poke out (one of my favorite features). They are light enough that my hands don't overheat. They are like a snugly blanket for my hands. I absolutely love them.

They are made of 35% cashmere and the rests is a blend of cotton, polyester, and microfiber. They come in thirteen different colors.

My only cons for this particular product is the price at $52 each. I also didn't like that I couldn't see what the colors looked like before purchasing. I even searched the rest of the website to see if I could find samples on some of the t-shirts they offer. However, the only color I could find on the website for the gloves was the default picture of light heather grey.

I took a chance when I ordered the heather purple and I was pleasantly surprised. I adore the color. It's a royal purple and perfect for me.

Literary Books Gifts sells many other book related products such as book bags and oodles of t-shirts for both men and women. It is a great site to purchase a unique gift for the book lover in your life.

Disclaimer: I was given a pair of writing gloves from Literary Book Gifts in exchange for writing this review. All opinions are my own.

{Review} Other Bodies by Joel Ohman

I tend to shy away from controversial topics. It's not because I don't have an opinion about them. Trust me. I totally do. However, I really dislike controversy and arguing. It's just not something I enjoy and, honestly, I'm not very good at it. I often have a hard time conveying what I think clearly in that type of situation.

This is why I thought long and hard before asking to be part of this review. Joel Ohman is an author who decided to tackle not only a controversial topic in his newest book, but perhaps one of the most controversial topics, abortion.

Other Bodies follows a young teenage girl named Hattie. The setting is somewhere in the future where the government has failed, the economy has failed, and the environment is so bad that the rivers only have trash floating in them and the sun no longer shines. Hattie is struggling to survive living in the inner city of Philadelphia after her grandfather, who raised her, has passed away. She can barely afford food or rent when she manages to finally land a job at Managed Motherhood (MM). She makes friends there and enjoys her job.

One aspect of her new job is to help the clients who come in to have an abortion. In this time period, there are robots who help with the procedure. In fact, there are so many robots that there have been laws enacted to protect their "human-ness." It's during a tour of the Medical Ring, when Hattie is shown how the Transport and Examination Devices or TEDs work. These robots give the patient a 4-D virtual experience all while scanning and documenting their health.

Hattie learns during her VR experience to help show her what the patient encounters that she is pregnant. Pregnant, broke, and barely surviving even with her new job. The book explores what it is MM does at their facility along with the ramifications of hard choices. Hattie determines that she cannot keep her baby and has an abortion. The book then follows her as she struggles with this decision and struggle she does.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this book. Author, Joel Ohman, is a great writer. I enjoyed the dialogue and the overall story. I'm just feel the end of the book lacked closure, but perhaps that was the point. He uses the story line to explore aspects of abortion that have come in to play recently, namely the selling of body parts. He shares why he felt the need to write this book HERE.

Ultimately the title plays in to the line that continues to roll through my mind "the body inside your body is not your body." The book is definitely thought provoking no matter where you stand on the issue of abortion.

{Review & Giveaway} CSB Day by Day Chronological Bible

**The giveaway is now closed. The winner is Zena Griffeth! Congrats!**

I love a good story. Just ask anyone that knows me. I have shelves of books in my home. I typically have at least two books going at a time (if not more). I just love reading.

The greatest story every told is the Bible. Have you ever read it cover to cover? I have a few times and I'm currently in the process again. I'm using a Bible app to keep me on track but I'm doing the actual reading in my NIV Study Bible that I've had for years. I'm about halfway through the Old Testament and I learn something new every time I read. I love that about the Bible.

I was approached about checking out a new chronological Bible. During one of my read throughs, I used one such style Bible. What's amazing about this method is it really helps one to see the overall timeline of the biblical story. I loved that I could see where the major and minor prophets fit into the biblical narrative. I really enjoyed reading it that way - like a true story line.

The CSB Day by Day Chronological Bible does that and more.

First let's go over the set up of the Bible itself. There are 52 weekly readings in the Bible. It's set up for one to read six days a week with the seventh day for reflection of the week's readings. There are large areas for you to jot notes on day seven. The text is also set up as in a single column so there are wide margins throughout allowing for ample room to jot down thoughts as one reads. The readings, as implied by the title, are in chronological order. This is not a Bible one would want to use to look up chapter and verse quickly and easily. It's not set up like that at all although it does have a nice index in the back so one can easily find a chapter/verse if desired.

The readings are broken into three main acts: God's Plan for All People, God's Covenant People; and God's New Covenant People. Each act begins with an introduction that talks about the setting and the people involved. Then each act is broken down further into scenes (think of how plays are written), and within the scenes, the readings. For example, the smallest Act is Act 1 which only has three scenes. Each scene has one to three readings. The largest scene is Scene 2 which covers the majority of the readings with nine scenes total. The last Act has five scenes.

Each day's reading starts with a introduction, questions to think about while reading, and lists out the reading for the day.

Now for the translation. I know there are folks out there who are very adamant about which Bible translation they read and why it's the correct one. I don't fall into that category. I grew up on the King James Bible but for the most part I have always read the New International Version. More recently I use the New America Standard Bible (NASB). And I even {gasp} read the Message version from time to time. One of my absolute favorite things to do is read the same verse in different translations as it helps me to see what it means.

If you'd like more information about the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) translation, then you can check it out on the publisher's website by clicking HERE.

I know that the next time I do a read through of the entire Bible (it will start when I've completed this current one), I will be using the CSB Day by Day Chronological Bible. I love the way it is set up and the entire feel of it.

Did you make a resolution this year to do a Bible read through? If you'd like to win your own copy of the Bible, please leave me a comment. This is a short time frame on the giveaway. You have until midnight tonight eastern standard time to leave your comment. The winner will be announced tomorrow on January 26, 2019.

{Review} Ellie Claire Art Journals

I have this quirk. I know there are others out there like me since I've met them. Want to know what it is? Well...I love office supplies. There...I said it. I'm not one who collects purses or shoes, but show me a bunch of journals, planners, pens and watch out! I have so many unused journals just waiting for me to write in them.

And pens...don't even get me started on pens! However, I have become a bit more discerning in my older years. I discovered a lovely writing pen a few years ago and now I've become a bit of a snob about what I use. In case you are wondering, I love the Uniball Signo 207 pens. LOVE them!

But journals...there is just something about an unused journal that calls to me every time. I doubt I will ever stop collecting and buying more. This is why I was thrilled to be included in the Ellie Claire Art Journal review. ::sigh:: They are simply divine!

First up is the Illuminate Your Story journal (you can purchase it HERE).

This is a gorgeous little journal. If you've ever seen medieval manuscripts with illuminated letters, this journal is reminiscence of that. It includes a two page spread for each letter that helps you create an illuminated letter. These pages are in dot grid format which makes it easier to copy the style shown.

There are also lined pages throughout for you to journal, additional drawing pages to help with extra embellishments, and a wonderful pen holder on the side (something I've never seen but now want in all my journals). This particular journal also has an elastic closure and a ribbon bookmark included.

Pages are thick and numbered. As someone who uses a bullet journal, I like that fact that the pages are numbered. I do wish there was a page in the front for a table of contents, but this really isn't a bullet journal styled journal so it's easily overlooked. Lastly, there is a keepsake pocket included on the inside of the back cover.

If you or anyone you know would like to learn how to draw embellished letters, this journal is definitely for you.

Next is the Illustrated Word: An Illuminated Bible Coloring Journal. (You can purchase it HERE.)

This is a straight forward journal. It has lined pages interspersed with coloring pages. The lined pages also include a color photo from a piece of illuminated manuscript. The coloring page is a black and white line drawing of that manuscript and/or drawing. While they are intricate coloring pages, they aren't ones that would take oodles of time to complete.

The pages are lovely. It is a wonderful hardcover book slightly over sized.

Lastly, there is the Faith & Lettering Journal (you can purchase it HERE).

This may be my favorite of the three. It is full of fantastic ideas. As someone who has a rather plain bullet journal because I lack the skills to do fancy lettering and embellishments, this journal shows you how to do it! There are two page spreads where you can trace an embellishment and then practice doing it on your own.

Pages inside include fully lined (go from margin to margin), line grid, dot grid (my favorite for journaling), and lined with bigger margins (see photos below).

                                                          Fully lined                                  Fuller margin

Throughout the journal are also full colored verse illustrations that are simply stunning. Along with all the various journal pages, there are also practice pages (as already mentioned) that covers everything from various lettering styles to embellishments. I will be keeping and using this journal!

The last two features of this journal make it shine even brighter. There is a pen loop on the spine which I think is just genius. And this journal is also designed so that the pages lay flat. This is a great bonus when not only writing but drawing and coloring. Overall, this was a simply gorgeous journal.

{Review} Literary Book Gifts

As anyone who knows me knows by this point, I love to read. I love books. I think there is absolutely no such thing as too many books only too few bookshelves. Just ask my hubby. Even though he loves books just as much as I do, most of the books in our home are mine or, ahem, "something I need to educate the children with" which is really code for I want it too. Shoot - my secret is now out!

I have no memories of before I could read and some of my fondest memories have to do with books. It's just simply who I am.

That's why I loved finding this adorable online store that has some very cute book related gifts from t-shirts to tote bags.

I was one of those weird kids who enjoyed Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre when I was about eleven years old. Hands down one of my absolutely favorite classic books.

I still remember when I was in sixth grade and one of the classes had been assigned the book Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. I overheard some of the kids moaning about having to read it and I was floored. It was one of my favorite books. I had read it four or five times at that point. How could they not like it?

See, I was weird even then when it came to books.

Literary Book Gifts offers up men's and women's styles of t-shirts as well as tote bags. Most of their designs have images for classic literature such as Pride and Prejudice or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or the Secret Garden. They also carry some more generic book images like one that has a "the end" plate on it or, my favorite, an old-fashioned typewriter.

If you are interested in purchasing gifts ('tis the season!), please use code MAINEBERRYPATCH20 to receive 20% off your order. There is no minimum order required to use that code. I know I will be doing some shopping here for the holidays!

{Review} Chris Tomlin's HOLY ROAR CD

I first heard Chris Tomlin sing live in 2005. He was the opening act for Steven Curtis Chapman and I was only vaguely familiar with his music at that time. I was most excited about seeing SCC and Casting Crowns (also the first time I heard Casting Crowns live as well). I still remember that concert. It was one of the first concerts I had ever been to period and it was well worth it. All three acts were stellar and I was now interested in hearing more from this new to me artist, Chris Tomlin.

Over the ensuing years, Chris Tomlin has only gained in popularity. Just last week he released his newest album, Holy Roar. I think most people probably sing a Chris Tomlin song in church at least once a month or more. He's been a very prolific (and excellent) singer/songwriter over the last 25 years. Wow...now I'm feeling a bit old. I didn't realize it had been that long!

In that time frame, Chris Tomlin has sold over 8 million records (crazy!) and has had sixteen number one hits. He's received many awards and continues to produce new music as well as tour. He is one of my favorite artists to see live and at last count I think I've seen him five times live.

I've been playing his newest album in my truck over the last few days. Holy Roar has twelve tracks including the title song. One of the first tracks released to radio was Resurrection Power.

You called me from the grave by name
You called me out of all my shame
I see the old has passed away
The new has come

Now I have resurrection power
Living on the inside
Jesus, You have given us freedom
No longer bound by sin and darkness
Living in the light of your goodness
You have given us freedom

Chris Tomlin has always been one of my favorite contemporary Christian singers and his new album does not disappoint. I have enjoyed listening to it as have my boys. I highly recommend it.

{Review} Whole Heart by Passion (CD)

Yes, Lord, walking in the way of Your truth we wait eagerly for You,
for Your name and Your renown are the desire of our hearts.
~Isaiah 26:8

The newest album from the Passion movement - Whole Heart - is being released today.

What is the Passion movement? Passion started in 1995 and is based on the verse from Isaiah that I posted above. Their mission is to reach young people ages 18-25 and create a revival in that age group. Their stated goal on their website is to lead people towards "renewed intimacy with God."

Lead by Louie & Shelley Giglio, Passion holds conferences and has musicians such as Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman lead the worship. The music has moved beyond the conferences and into churches around the globe.

Their newest album was recorded live at the latest Passion Conference and features artists such as Crowder and Kristian Stanfill. Some of the songs may be ones you've heard before like "God, You're So Good" or "Great are You Lord" or they may be brand new like "Ghost" which features Crowder or "All My Hope" which is another new one by Crowder.

Your love it comes with no conditions
You give us Your whole heart
My hope is in the blood of Jesus
I know who I am because of who You are

I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak at the album. I've been listening to it now for the last couple of weeks and it's been fantastic. It's full of wonderful worship songs. And since it was recorded live some are longer than a typical song you might hear on the radio (four go over five minutes along). I can only imagine what it must have been to be there live during this recording.

I love going to live worship concerts. I always feel like it's a small taste of heaven.

{Review} Alpha / Omega by Kutless

../Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail%20Downloads/3AD70613-F3B6-4889-8708-63BAE1A72266/cover.jpeg

I can remember listening to Kutless well over ten years ago which makes sense since they've been around since 2001. One of the first songs I remember hearing was called Strong Tower.

You are my strong tower
A shelter over me
Beautiful and mighty
Everlasting King
You are my strong tower
Fortress when I'm weak
Your name is true and holy
And your face is all I see

At the beginning of August for the last twenty plus years there has been a multi-day Christian musical festival in a neighboring state. The last year it was four days was in 2012 and that was the year I was able to see Kutless live. Their show did not disappoint although I remember the sound was off for those of us in the press pit watching.

Lead Sing Jon Micah Sumrall

Their newest album Alpha / Omega just released last Friday. It contains ten songs, some brand new, some covers, and they have even included a remix of Strong Tower. As always they stay true to their roots of a little bit of rock and a whole lot of Jesus.

I truly appreciate what Jon Micah had to say about what keeps them motivated to continue making music.

"We really believe that music can make a difference in people's lives,"
shares Jon Micah Sumrall. "Music is an incredibly powerful tool that can
break down walls and allows us to communicate a message of hope to people
who may not listen otherwise. We are still recording and performing
because we really do believe it makes a difference. We hear stories all the time
from people who share with us how a concert or a song has radically impacted
their life, and it's these types of testimonies that keep us going year after year."

I love music and I believe fully in what Jon Micah says about its ability to impact lives around us. It truly is a gift from God.

In 2012 Kutless formed EOTA Ministries (End Of The Age) in order to expand the ability to bring Christ to those around the globe. EOTA is a non-profit organization that helps Kutless hold large, free outreach events and concerts. They have been able to do to in places like the Ukraine and Belarus where thousands have turned their life to Christ as a result.

Kutless is more than just a band singing music to honor the Lord. They are walking the walk through EOTA Ministries.

{Review} Jeremy Camp - The Answer

I have a been a fan of Jeremy Camp's now for some time. His music is fantastic and he is wonderful in concert as well. I appreciate his heart when he is at a live show as you can see his love for Christ simply shining through.

His newest album is called The Answer. And honestly, he has it so right with those two words. The answer is always, always "Jesus." He is the one who will fix it every time - without fail. While we may not like the answer He gives, it's always the right one. And the chorus to the title song goes like this:

I know the answer
to every question
The one solution
to every fear
I know my help
and where it comes from
Jesus, He is the answer.

The first track on the album "Word of Life" has been out on the radio for awhile now. It's a great "sing along" with another set of fantastic and truthful lyrics.

Word of life
Speak to my weary heart
Strengthen my broken parts
Lead me to your open arms

Work of truth
Illuminate all these lies
The enemy speaks inside
In freedom I will rise

Cause you called me out from the grave
So I can live like I've been changed
There is a new song in my soul
And it begins
When I breathe in
Your Word of Life

I love hearing from artists about what inspire their songs. Jeremy co-wrote all but the last track on this album. Having seen him in concert, he's one of the few artists that actually brings a Bible on stage with him and shares directly from scripture. Like I said earlier, you can see he has a heart for God.

This is one album that my boys and I have been listening to over and over again since we received the CD in the mail for this review. It hasn't gotten old yet! We love it all.

{Review} If We Make it Home by Christina Suzann Nelson

I'm going to simply begin with this...I loved this book. Loved it. I can't remember the last time I have read a book that I could identify so closely with the characters. More on that in a moment.

If We Make It Home is the first novel of Christina Suzann Nelson. It is set in the Pacific Northwest (a place I'd love to visit someday) and it follows the lives of four college friends twenty-five years after graduation.

Ireland is now a jaded college professor who is facing a serious allegation at work. It was best for her to take some time away and evaluate her life while she allowed rumors to die down. Victoria is a successful speaker who has taught women how to be the perfect wife and mother. She then realizes she may have her career crash down around her because she didn't listen to her own advice. Then there is Jenna, the character that I most closely related to for rather obvious reasons. She's a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of triplets (okay, maybe not that part). Her babies have now left home and she finds herself in limbo trying to figure out this whole empty-nest thing. And lastly there is Hope, a friend they all had fond memories of but who sadly had passed away from cancer only a year before. (The back cover states she's died, so this isn't a spoiler.)

Due to various circumstance, Ireland, Victoria, and Jenna find themselves back at their alma mater where they discover Hope has died. While in the cafe her daughter now runs, House of Hope, they meet Glenda. She's an older woman who takes groups of women into the wilderness to teach them survival skills. On a whim they all decide to go, as a tribute to Hope.

Their trip soon turns "Gilligan Island-ish" when they find themselves lost, hurt and without a guide, while trying to find their way out of the forest Glenda had dropped them into. They have to learn to trust themselves and see if they can manage to find their way home again.

This was a great first novel and one I enjoyed more than I thought I would when I first saw it offered. Jenna was definitely someone I related to on so many levels. The overall writing was wonderful. This is a book that I have continued to think about even weeks after finishing it.

Nelson uses great detail to introduce the characters to us in the beginning and get us invested in them. Each main character tells the story from her point of view. Nelson writes each section from a first person point of view with the character's name as a heading in order to keep straight who is talking. I enjoyed this as she would often tell a scene from each of the characters point of view, giving us a broader sense of what was happening.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

{Review} Matthew West "All In" Album

/Users/chelseaperritt/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads/D044FA11-9868-4B9D-BA62-7D9F6971EB0E/00602547135308-CVR.jpg

I first heard Matthew West sing years ago when he was just starting out as a singer/songwriter. He made quite the impression on me - in a good way! I don't even remember who the headliner was that night, but I still remember Matthew (see, we're even on a first name basis!). He was engaging and personable which is hard to do in front of an audience of hundreds. And he was also very talented. I've enjoyed listening to him over the years as he has continued to hone his skill.

His seventh album All In was just released on the September 22, 2017. Track two "Broken Things" has been playing on the radio for a bit now and it's my favorite of his newest ones. The words drive home the fact that we are all broken, sinners. And only God can take and make good come from that type of mess.

Chorus:
Now I'm just a beggar in the presence of a king
I wish I could bring so much more
But if it's true you use broken things
There here I am Lord, I'm all yours

Such simple truth in that chorus. And the rest of the lyrics are just as hard hitting. We serve an awesome God who can turn even the worse sinner into someone who can bring glory to His kingdom. I'm glad I serve a God like that!

Another fave moment for me on this album was his daughter Lulu singing on track 13 "Becoming Me." She has an amazing voice! And the album ends with a fun cameos by both his daughters doing an unusual take on "All In."

I'm definitely enjoying listening to this entire album while I'm out and about during the day.

{Review} Patterns of Evidence (DVD)

Is the Bible true? Are the historical accounts listed in Genesis, Exodus, and other books of the Bible proven facts? Does the history and the archaeological record support it?

Those are some of the questions that Tim Mahoney set out to find. He went on a search to discover if the "patterns of evidence" would prove whether the Bible was fact or fiction. The result of that search is his movie - Patterns of Evidence: Exodus.

Many scientists feel that there is no evidence to support the account of Exodus as depicted in the Bible. While they feel the story is worth honoring (those who are Jewish), many feel it is nothing more than a great story. Fiction. Mahoney sets out to talk to experts in various fields from archaeology to history to Orthodox Jews who read the account in the Torah in Hebrew. Who is right?

Mahoney himself acts as a non-biased tour guide. He sets out to see how events might have actually occurred. If they aren't true, why? If they are true, why don't the experts agree?
