{Review} Safe Glow Dog Collar

I was recently given the opportunity to try out a neat dog training collar. While my eight year old dog is very well trained, I really loved this collar for another reason….it lights up. Seriously.

We live in the country on 150 acres surrounded by lots and lots of woods. It’s currently deer season and my dog looks like a coyote. Considering that coyotes can also be shot any time of the year, we always take extra precaution with her but even more so right now.

She is snoozing in the sun waiting for one of her people to open the door for her.

That’s where The Safe Glow LED Dog Collar comes in. The collar is made of water resistant nylon (it is not waterproof) with a strip of reflective material. Beneath the reflective strip is a flexible polymer core that lights up. It’s so cool! It’s powered by a long-life lithium battery with a very efficient LED bulb (10,000 hours). It retails for $29.95.

I’m very happy that it’s also water resistant. We have a brook on our property and a water-loving dog. She’s a wonderful “mutt” (a shepherd/lab mix) and loves spending time in the water. In fact, we’ve been seeing her down there trying to catch fish a lot lately. Very fun to watch.

The light has three options:  a steady glow, a slow flash, and a fast flash. I typically leave it on a steady glow. Living in Maine where it is now getting dark around four o’clock in the afternoon, having a lighted collar on my dog gives me a better peace of mind when she needs to go out after dark. There is a small box with a push button in it that’s part of the collar. It’s as simple as pushing the button once, twice, three times, or four to turn it on to one of its modes all the way to off.

My sweet dog modeling the collar.

The collar also comes in three sizes:
  • Small for dogs 7”-11” such as Chihuahua, Miniature Poodle, and most teacup breeds
  •  Medium for dogs 11”-14” such as beagles, terriers, dachshunds, Lhasa Apso, etc.
  •  Large for dogs 14”-17” such as basset hounds, cocker spaniels, Doberman pinschers, labs, etc.

I also like the secure clasp of the collar. I do not worry that it’s going to slip off.  It also comes with a clasp where it’s easy to attach a leash and tags. I was also very pleased with how easy it is to put on and take off, so easy that all of my children can do it.

Overall I’m very pleased with this collar. While I’m not sure I would have paid retail price for one, if you live in an area where the potential to lose your dog at night is high, I would recommend it. I really could have used a collar like this with my first dog, Keeysha. She was an all black lab/husky who loved to take off at night when she was a puppy. I used to spend a lot of time driving around our neighborhood calling for her. Typically she would make her way home without my help, but it would have been easier to find her if she had had a lighted collar on.

I'm also happy to be using it currently (we have a red one) since we live in such a rural area where hunting is a large part of fall activities. I'm glad that I can take another step to keep my dog safe while she's outside.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
