Knitting

One of my goals is to learn how to knit. My fabulous MIL has been attempting to teach me. I have no trouble casting on, but I've been having difficulty getting past that part. She's so patient with me too & I know I just probably need more practice.

However, this past week my FIL was hospitalized briefly (he appears much better now) & while there she was (of course) knitting. She always has some knitting with her - socks, mittens, scarves, you name it. One of the nurses came in & commented that my MIL knits "the hard way" & proceeded to show her how she does it.

She uses one of these round looms. It's called a "Knifty Knitter" & it's made by Provo Craft. It comes with all four looms, a plastic needle, & a hook to finish off the project with. You can make lots of things with it - including scarves & mittens. The nurse said she could do a hat in about two hours.

I went over to visit yesterday & my MIL presented me with an early Valentine's gift - my own Knifty Knitter!! She also wanted a hat by the end of the weekend but I have to confess to not even trying it yet. She even bought me yarn! However, it's the fancier kind so I'm going to get some plain yarn tomorrow & give it a go. Maybe once I get the hang of it, I'll attempt it the old fashioned way.

  1. OOOOH! I just got one of those sets this week, too! They were half price at Hobby Lobby (the entire set of 4 cost me $6!!!). I am about 3/4 way done one hat. I have only been doing it for a few minutes at a time, but it goes QUICKLY! I doubled up my yarn and it is making a nice thick hat. You will have a blast with it.

Hannah liked watching it so much, I went ahead and got her a small loom to practice with (also half price). I know how to knit, and learned how to knit in the round, but when making adult and child sized hats, this loom is SO much quicker and easier (it takes appx. 90 stitches on a size 9 needle for an adult hat...AND it takes forever, AND I still can't get the "gap" tight when changing needles, sigh). Play with it, Lisa, you'll LOVE it!!!!

  3. I guess I must knit the old fashioned way too (LOL)! I think my mil has made some hats on one of those looms, but she called it something other than knitting! You'll have to show us your finished project.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
