Homeschool Memoires - Snack Foods #7

THEME
Awhile back Mother Dear received a question on what snack foods to buy for homeschooling families, on the go or at home, and she inspired this week’s theme. There are so many different kinds of snack foods, store-bought and homemade, and I would like to invite you to share what snack foods your family usually snacks on throughout the week. You’re welcome to make season lists too. I know there are different meals we eat during the colder seasons than we do in the warmer ones, and I imagine there are also seasonal snack foods as well.
=========================================
I have to admit that I almost skipped this week's memoir. Why? Because I have two of the most pickiest children in the entire world. Seriously. Meal time is down right boring with a capital B around here. Now, I do have three boys, but I must have done something different with the younger one as he eats a larger variety of food and he will actually try something new without pitching a fit!

As you can tell, this is something I have struggled with for a long time, but it is slowly getting better. My middle son now eats a few new things and even tried a new food to him the other day and loved it. That's progress. Unfortnately, my oldest son - at age 12 - is very much set in his ways. ::sigh::
On to what we use for snacks around here though....
  • Granola bars - chocolate chip Sunbelt brand only thank you very much. The oldest & youngest eat these. I do as well actually.
  • Cereal bars - same brand but either raspberry, strawberry or blueberry. These are my middle sons favorite. My youngest used to eat them but not much anymore.
  • Peanut butter crackers. I will usually buy one package a week of predone ones & when they are gone they are gone. My two youngest like these.
  • Peanut butter and cheese crackers - my oldest. He went through a phase of eating cheese crackers with cheddar cheese (pre-made) but I think he od'd on them as he won't eat them now.
  • Plain crackers - all
  • Popcorn - oldest & youngest
  • Yogurt - all (but they have to have the Trix bran with the watermelon flavor so they don't get this often)
  • Grapes/apples/bananas - only the youngest (he loves grapes)
  • White American cheese slices (from the deli only)
  • Graham crackers
  • Goldfish
  • Popsicles (my middle son loves these & eats at least a box a wee on his own - fruit juice ones only)
  • Anything sweet I allow them to have - which is limited

As for drinks, I still allow my youngest son more milk since he's four but I'm tapering that off. I used to allow them all as much as they wanted, but we went through 3-4 gallons a week. That became too pricey. They two oldest mainly drink water. I allow them juice on occasion (I usually buy one gallon a month as a treat). They rarely if ever have soda. My middle & youngest sons are the only ones who drink it. My oldest never liked soda - yeah!

Meal times & food choices here have been an issue for a long time & one we work on. I just pray they grow out of some of it as they gain maturity. I know they are healthy, but they could certainly use a bit more variety.

  1. I can safely say that without a doubt my kids are pickier than yours. Yours eat a BUNCH compared to my nugget-monsters!

I'll trade you one pair of red shoes for one less picky eater!

  2. Oh my, I completely understand your pain. Hunter is the only one of mine that will try anything... The girls are so picky that they barely eat. Which makes it hard for them to gain weight. UGH! Good luck!

  3. I may have to take you up on that, Suzanne! ;-) I didn't mention meals did I? Lunch is PB&J and supper is nuggets. Except for Friday night when the two little ones will eat pizza & the oldest makes his OWN PB&J sandwich. ::sigh:: At least they are healthy!

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
