Homeschool Memoirs: #17 Chores

THEME:
This week I would you to share how chores are done in your home. How you order your day with school and getting housework done. How do you decide which chores should be done by which child, of which age? I’m looking forward to hearing them!

=================
We are very loose around here with chores. I do the lion's share but I'm okay with that for now. A lot of it is my personality I'm sure. I find it easier to just do it myself. I know. If my IRL friend Kathy T. is reading this, she is SO going to call me on this!!! ;-) I know I need to be training my kids & it's getting there - slowly.

So what do they do?
My oldest is 12. His biggest chore right now is to keep the woodpile outside full as well as the inside wood box. On occasion his 7 year old brother helps but it's really B's main chore in the winter. I also have him empty the dishwasher, sweep the kitchen, and wipe down the main bathroom although not each and every day. This is in addition to maintaining his room and I admit that is a huge disaster area. About twice a year I go in & hoe it out but he hates it when I do that as I simply chuck a lot of stuff.

My middle son vacuums the living room as his main chore - aside from maintaining his room. He will do general pick-up when I ask. He also loves to dust but I don't do that a lot around here. Just don't date your doodles in it & I'm fine. ;-)

My youngest is four & I have him feed the dog & do general pick-up. That's it. Maintain his room. Not a ton.

As you can see, I don't require a lot from my boys. I do most of the chores as I mentioned but we'll get there. The big thing...I'm really okay with how things work - for now.

  1. I imagine that maintaining the wood pile is a pretty big job. Sounds like you have a great plan.

  2. Sometimes I wish I had more time to do more of the chores myself so the kids wouldn't have to help so much, but I just don't. So, they don't have any choice but to do a lot of work around here if they want me to get them to all of the activities they like to participate in - sports, choir, etc.

  3. One thought, since you have boys. Think about them living as a bachelor and then as a future husband. Will they be ready to maintain a house, clean the bathroom, wash their clothes, cook something other then a microwave meal?? If they know how to do these things, then you have done your job. If they don't...then consider working it into your routine. Your future daughters in law will thank you!! ;)

    Ok...so, that's what I told my boys growing up as they were doing chores. I do have one thankful daughter in law, so far. hehe

    Just wanted to throw out that little nugget to ponder. However...it does all come down to what works best for your home. Sounds like you have it under control. :)

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
