Review: Apologia Press

No, that is not a science book. Typically when anyone mentions "Apologia" in homeschooling circles that is the first thing most people think of. However, recently Apologia has started carrying homeschooling resources just for us parents.

These are listed on their website under the "Apologia Press" link and then "resources for parents." I had actually already ordered a book via this site late last year. They carry Diana Waring's wonderful books and I purchased one (I think it was Reaping the Harvest but I own both and now I can't remember which one I just bought from Apologia).

All members of the TOS Homeschool Crew were given a copy of Debra Bell's The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling ($20). Here is what their website says about the book:

Debra Bell's best-selling manual has been revised and updated for a new generation of home educators! This indispensable resource belongs on the shelf of every family taking part in home-based learning. Inside you will find:
  • Six ingredients of a successful homeschool
  • Subject-by-subject guidelines and program recommendations
  • Keys to unlocking your child's learning potential
  • Ten ways to motivate the reluctant learner
  • Creative solutions for burnout, budgeting, and managing your time
This new edition includes a guide to using the Internet and new technology in your home school. You will also get the latest information on teaching middle school and high school courses, including a list of academic contests and competitions. Tips on multilevel teaching and engaging toddlers and a resource guide with up-to-date contact information round out this amazing tool!

I found this book very informative and I've been homeschooling now for seven years. There are some great chapters as well for those just starting out as well as though who are still contemplating it whether they want to homeschool or not. I really like how Debra really lays it out there. She doesn't hide anything about the hardships and joys of homeschooling. In fact, she makes sure you face them full on before making the choice. I wished I had this book when I first began homeschooling.

However, there are also many chapters that are helpful for those who have been homeschooling for a while. This really is a wonderful resource to keep on hand in order to refer to as time goes by. It helped me figure out a few things I need to change. All good!

If you'd like to see the table of contents, click HERE. You can also read a sample chapter (Chapter 6) of the book as well.

Oh thank goodness! I'm not here all alone. Thanks for leaving me a comment. It helps that I'm not always talking to myself. Right? Hello?
