Celebrating My Husband

My hubby can be a bit picky about what he likes. He does a lot of research before purchasing anything and always knows exactly what he wants before buying. It's certainly not a bad quality, but it makes things a bit hard at gift giving time. Over the year I've just learned to give him some small fun things for his birthday or Christmas or anniversary and then he would go buy something he really wanted.

However, this Christmas I decided to do something a bit different based on some of my blog and Facebook readings. I had stumbled upon an idea that I put in to play this Christmas season. I have chosen to celebrate my husband for the last 12 days leading up to Christmas.

Over the past 11 days, he has received a gift based on that number day. So far I've given him:

Day #1 - A large old-fashioned wall map (he loves maps) which I didn't realize until it arrived was actually a huge wall sticker. We haven't figured out where to put it yet, but he assures me he does like it.

Day #2 - A warm pair of boot socks

Day #3 - Three snacks. I gave him chocolate covered almonds, chocolate covered peanuts, and trail mix. He ate some of these and then shared the rest with his employees.

Day #4 - More snacks. This time I bought him four different packages of beef jerky. He shared that he always keeps jerky in his truck to snack on which I hadn't realized.

Day #5 - Five movies from the cheap bin at Wal-Mart. These were all movies either my son told me my hubby liked (he was with me when I bought them) or ones I knew he had watched over and over on TV.

Day #6 - I was struggling to figure this one out so he ended up with a six-pack of beer. I put it in the fridge in a brown paper bag with a bow on it and waited to see how long it took him to find it. One thing I should share is I hardly ever buy him beer. In the 20 years we've been married, I think I've purchased him beer maybe three or four times. This made it a huge deal for him and the smile on his face was worth it.

Day #7 - A collage frame with 7 openings and photos from our family pictures taken this past fall.

Day #8 - He had mentioned he would like some chocolate covered cherries for his time off work at Christmas so I got him eight boxes. Needless to say this one was a surprise as well. He brought some of these to work too.

Day #9 - Nine pairs of workout socks (he just started a karate class plus a kickboxing class).

Day #10 - Ten new white t-shirts (they sell them in packs of 5!)

Day #11 - A $110 gift certificate to his favorite store - Cabela's (this is really the largest gift he'll be getting from me)

Day #12 - This blog post with 12 reasons why I love him.

Twelve Reasons I Love My Husband

1. He loves God and continues to grow in his relationship with him.

2. He loves me unconditionally.

3. He works hard every day to provide for his family. I can't tell you how huge this is for me. I look back at where we started - two very broke college students who decided to get married in a whirlwind of emotions - to where we are today. We are now two stable, loving adults who have a wonderful family led by a man who loves us all very much. I may or may not have gotten a bit choked up saying this very thing to him while we had dinner at the CN Tower this past summer in Toronto. We took a seven day trip to Canada to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

4. I probably shouldn't tell him this one, but I love how he always breaks out in to song. This may mean that I'll hear him singing non-stop for the next few days, but it may be worth it. Typically they are songs of his own design. Tunes you may recognize, but I can almost guarantee the words will be of his own making.

5. I sometimes wake up suddenly to find his face inches from mine. He'll have a silly grin on his face and a small little smile. I may be grumpy, but I love that he does this...just not every day thankfully!

6. That he can fix or build just about anything. While he may chose not to fix things these days (I now have an appliance repair man on speed dial!!), he has the capability to do so. It has saved us tons of money over the years and we've had some amazing things simply because he had the necessary skills to build it himself. Case in point...his summer project which he built with the help of a friend...our new backyard deck and patio

7. He's a shrewd businessman. We used to talk about how "one day" he would start his own business. The Lord provided a company for him in a different way and way sooner than we ever expected, but has continued to bless us on this journey. He just celebrated his second year of owning the business.

8. He continues to want to grow our relationship. He's a great role model for the boys on how a man should treat a wife. (Although, last night we did clear the living room pretty quickly when we started kissing. Always great fun. HA!)

9. He is usually pretty patient with both the boys and I. Sometimes we really need that.

10. He's an extrovert. I'm not. We are pretty much the poster children for "opposites" attract and not just because of our personalities.

11. How even after 20 years together, we are still learning things about each other.

12. He is my biggest cheerleader and supports all of my crazy ideas, even when he'd rather not.

I can truly say that after all this time together, I still love my husband - even more than I ever thought was possible and even when he annoys the snot out of me - which he still does from time to time! We are certainly not perfect, but thankfully we have learned a thing or two about relationships over the years and my annoyance rarely lasts long these days.

I'm not sure if I'll do the 12 days of gifts again next year, but I know that this year, it was worth every creative thought I had to use to pull it together.

I love you, sweetie. Merry Christmas!

Creative Afternoon

Every year the boys & I look forward to a card swap hosted by Amber at Kids Craft Weekly. It's rather simple to participate. Each November she hosts a sign up page. Once you sign up the computer does its magic and you are matched with nine other participants (ten total including yourself). Then the kiddos create Christmas cards and send them out to each of participating families. We always send one to Amber as well.

Last year and this year we started splitting up the creating amongst the boys. B14 & N9 made four cards each and J6 (with some help from me) made three cards. That gives us 11 cards - just right.

This afternoon we sat down and put our creative juices to work. Here is what B14 came up with. I love the sentiment he created inside each one.

He used a Christmas tree stamp I have to punch a negative image on the front of the card. Then he back it with green paper. He used markers to color the stumps and outline the stars as well as add ornaments to the tree. Simple but cute.

Do you see why I love this?

Here is what N9 created.

We had planned to do just the snowflakes (another negative stamp) and add the blue paper. He wanted to do more.

And on the inside he added a little pop-up "hi." He told me he learned this from lapbooking. Loved that!

Last we have J6. I came up with the design but he helped put them all together.

Essentially we just paper-pieced a snowman together - my scrapbooking background coming in to play. I used my little Xyron to make them into stickers. The boys thought this was beyond cool! The snowflakes are the positive images from the cards N9 made.

I love that the boys did all of these on their own. They each signed the cards. I will be putting together a short note to go inside each card that tells about us and these will get mailed out shortly. We have three of them heading off to Australia! In years past we had more countries we sent to, but this year we only have Australia (Amber is from there) and the rest are in the USA.

We'll be tracking the ones sent to us on a map. A little geography study thrown in to all the fun crafting.

The Perfect Tree

Click to play Christmas tree

============================

We went out this past Sunday to find our Christmas Tree. There is a tree farmer just up the road from us & we started going there last year (our first year in a long time to have a real tree). The boys love walking through the fields of trees looking for "the perfect one." Each one has to try his hand at cutting it down. Then we haul it home & decorate it.

We came home after church & had lunch. Then we all piled back in the truck & headed to the tree farm. After we got the tree home & inside, I took some time to read the paper & get a grocery list together. Then J & I headed out to do the grocery shopping. By the time we got home, the two older boys & Daddy had the tree up, lights & garland on & ready for decorating.

Just before bedtime, the boys put on the ornaments. For the most part, the majority of ornaments on the tree this year are theirs. Each year my hubby's aunt buys everyone an ornament. She has been doing this since my hubby was a baby. Each year as I take the ornaments off the tree, I package each of the boys in to separate bags. That way I can just hand each of them their ornament collection to hang.

We do have other ornaments for the tree. At one point in our married lives we bought a house and it had a HUGE great room...as in 30 feet ceilings. I kind you not. We bought a 15 foot tree that year & had so little in the way of ornaments that it was almost laughable so we bought more. We still have all those ornaments. Needless to say, many stay in the boxes & never get hung on the tree. Some day we may have need of them...hopefully.

Calling All Mother's of Boys!

...of wives of men who still think like Peter-Pan. ;-)

It IS the season...of holiday giveaways out in the blogosphere. I'm coming across some daily. Most just require a comment on their blog to be entered & then they pick a random person to win. I've actually won (drum roll) this blog makeover that way PLUS I won a Star Wars Clone Wars digital camera - seriously. I have yet to figure out which of my boys will get it - probably N since B already has a digital camera (that he bought with his own money), but we'll see.

Anyway....

This giveway I wanted to share about today is for this....
What little boy (or grown up little boy) wouldn't love this??? Want the details & to enter yourself? Click HERE to head over to Frugal Upstate. BTW, you might want to hang around her blog for a bit as she is doing a few giveaways lately. And prepare to do a lot of ducking if your little guy wins. ;-)

Fun Christmas Ideas for Kids

In my blog reading over the past week, I came across a really neat find for a Kids Ornament Swap over at Full Circle. You can click on that link to find out the details, but basically you will be making 5-8 ornaments (all the same & the number depends on how many sign up) & then you will swap them out with other children. I know that my boys love making things like this so it will be neat to do for Christmas & what kid doesn't enjoy getting mail! You only have until Sunday, November 16th (THIS SUNDAY!!) to sign-up so be sure to go to the blog to get all the details - including the sign-up e-mail address. The theme is a generic "Winter Wonderland" which would include anything nature oriented. I have yet to decide if we'll come up with our own idea or just buy some neat kits from Oriental Trading. Click HERE for a peak at what they offer for winter ornament kits. They have tons to choose from!

The next thing I wanted to share was a Kids Christmas Card Swap. We actually participated in this one last year. This is hosted by Kids Craft Weekly which is a weekly e-mail full of craft ideas. My boys LOVED doing this last year. Half of the cards we swapped out went to international addresses so that was really neat (postage was about $1 per card). We have huge world map hanging in our hallways that have seen better days (i.e. I need new ones asap) so we put Christmas stickers on the locations as we received back our cards. Overall it was really fun. We did only get back nine cards but considering what can happen when you do a swap, this went very well. If you click on the link above, it will take you to a FAQ page & the sign-up page. The sign-up deadline for this swap is Tuesday, November 18th so be sure to sign up soon!

Enjoy! ;-)
