Homeschool Memoirs: A Thankful Heart

THEME
This week, you guessed it, is going to be about having a thankful heart! Yes, of course, we should always be thankful for everything we’re blessed with, but it’s not too often we actually sit and ponder what. This week please join me in writing 27 things you’re thankful (There’s got to be at least 27things!). I picked 27 because this year Thanksgiving is on the 27th of November. Also, share a Scripture verse for this week!

=====================

While I've been doing this all month, I'm still going to "play today" so here are my 27 things I'm thankful for...

  1. For my parents in trusting their lives to God when they were in their 30s & had five children. For raising me in the church & allowing me the chance to learn about God.
  2. For Jesus saving me at age 8 & keeping after me all those years until I came all the way back to him 16 years ago.
  3. For my hubby who loves me all the time, no matter how cranky & nasty I am to him. He loves me just the way I am & far more than I deserve. For how hard he works so that I can be a homeschooling SAHM to our boys.
  4. For my children – all three boys. God certainly knew what he was doing when he gave me rough & tumble boys!
  5. For my sister, Beth. She’s just an awesome sister & friend.
  6. For my in-laws who are always supportive.
  7. For the freedom & ability to openly homeschool my children without fear of reprisal.
  8. For the freedom to worship god openly without fear. We are so very blessed in this country.
  9. For my DSL connection. So nice!
  10. For the Internet in general. It is literally my lifeline to the world & what has kept me sane the last seven years I’ve been a SAHM.
  11. For my church.
  12. For my LTG partner. Julie – you are awesome.
  13. For my weekly Bible study. We had a potluck tonight & it was wonderful to be able to sit around & chat & have some great fellowship together.
  14. For a day with family tomorrow.
  15. For Diet Mt. Dew – my drink of choice. Okay, okay, okay, I’m addicted. I admit it!!! ;-)
  16. For supportive friends – who know what to say, when to say it, and how to just be there to listen.
  17. For my crocs. Oh how I love my crocs – winter & summer – my favorite shoe to wear.
  18. For my comfy cardigan sweater that keeps me warm when I’m home.
  19. For a roof over my head – a safe roof, a comfy roof. It may not be the roof I want for the long term, but it’s great for what we need now.
  20. For almost being debt-free!!! One more year & we’ll have ZERO debt! It only took us 15 years of marriage to figure this financial thing out. LOL
  21. For the ability to move back to the family homestead to live.
  22. For chocolate. So yummy!
  23. For my mom’s oatmeal rolls. Even yummier than chocolate – trust me.
  24. For my MOPS group at church. A lifeline for moms with young ones. So thankful for those moms who decided to start one last year.
  25. For the AWANA program at church – for planting the word of God in young minds where it will last a lifetime.
  26. For the start of the Advent season on Sunday – a great time to reflect on what the Christmas season is truly about.
  27. For life.

And my scripture...

Psalm 100:4 (NIV)
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

I'm Thankful For...

...music

When I was a mere five years old, I convinced my mom to allow me to take piano lessons. I can still remember my instructor. She would come to my house once a week & we'd go in to my parents bedroom where the piano was kept for my lessons. I loved my lessons. There was only one problem...I did not love learning to read music. In fact, I didn't learn at that point. I was reading the fingering numbers. Of course, my instructor did figure this out a few months after we had started. I was only five years old at the time. She switched to a book that had no fingering numbers. I floundered. I thought it too hard. I begged my mom to quit. I was five remember. And she let me.

I still remember seeing my instructor though. Not only did she attend the same area church as we did but she was also the music instructor for our school district. So once a week I remember her coming to my kindergarten class to teach us all about music. I remember being shy around here because I felt bad about quitting. She was always nice to me though.

Fast forward six years. In our school district, starting in the fifth grade, every child is allowed to start band. In my family, in the fifth grade, every child in my family is allowed to play in the band on the clarinet and only the clarinet.

You may ask, "Why only the clarinet?" Good question! Simply because that was the only instrument we owned. A neighbor had older children & had given it to us. Every one of us played the clarinet for at least one year - fifth most likely - while we were growing up. My oldest brother (eight years older than me) played it during his fifth grade year. Then he quit. My older sister (five years older) played. I have the marching band pictures to prove all this by the way, but I'm being nice & not digging them out to scan & post them. Then my other brother (four years old than me) also played - in fifth grade. See the picture forming?

Then I came along. I love music. I love everything about it. It's one of my "languages." I understand it. It calms me. In fifth grade, I joined band and one very important thing happened...I learned to read music.

I played the clarinet at school & diligently practiced at home. But I also started going in to my parents bedroom to play around on the piano. I began looking at some old student books my mom had laying there (she had played a bit as well) & began to teach myself. There is only one problem with this...I could only read the treble clef since that is all the clarinet calls for. I had no clue on the bass clef & couldn't figure it out from the book.

I began to ask my mom about lessons again. She made a stipulation. I had to call up my former teacher & ask her myself. ::shudder:: However, the desire to learn overcame any fears I had about it & I did just that. Unfortunately, she did not have any openings during the school year, but she did agree to take me on during the summer months. I did that for a few years & progressed.

During my seventh grade year I became frustrated with band & my director and quit. Which was actually a good thing. My younger sister (about two years younger than me) was in fifth grade and needed the clarinet to do her requisite year of band - which she did. Then she quit & I took it back in eighth grade.

I continued to play in the band (regular band, pep band, & jazz band). I was also continuing with my piano during the summers until 8th grade as well. That is when my teacher (Mrs. House) had an opening during the school year. I used to walk down to the main street in town & she would pick me up on her way by from getting her children at the local Christian school. I'd go home, she'd settle her kids down & I'd have my half hour lesson. Then my dad would come pick me up. I loved my lessons.

I also sang in the choir from fifth grade to my senior year. Did I mention how much I love music?

While in high school, I also began playing piano for jazz band rather than my clarinet. I never felt I was good enough with it, but I did all right. I was never great at improve with it though & I still remember trying to figure out Joy to the World (the "Jeremiah was a bull frog" version). There were something like 12 bars of improve for the piano as an intro. I never got it so we started the song where everyone else came in. ::sigh::

Then at one point - sophomore year I think - we had no trombones for our pep band. None. A good brass section is kind of important when you are cheering on your basketball team. (We did not have football at my school - long story.) So our band director asked if anyone was willing to learn how to play. Just enough for the songs we needed for pep band & just that year as there was a great brass section coming up the next year from the middle school. I volunteered along with two of my good friends. Talk about funny. I played clarinet, Tara played flute, & Heidi played the bass drum. But we played trombone during pep band and had a blast. Although, I still have to laugh. I'm short people. I have short arms! It was always funny when I had to play the note that required the slide to be all the way out! LOL I would just usually throw my arm down there as far as I could reach & pray for the best. I was never so happy to see freshman join my band in the fall! ;-)

My junior year I was second chair clarinet. Believe me, the girl who played first chair was amazing! But my senior year, that was me, first chair. Yikes! It was fun but sometimes very stressful.

I loved playing in a band. I loved playing the piano. I loved singing. I loved my clarinet.

Sadly, I kept up with none of those things once I left high school. Something that was such a part of me was no longer there. At times I really felt the loss. As I've grown older, I've felt it more & more. The thing I regret the most is the loss of my skills.

I can barely remember the fingerings any more for the clarinet. I've had to remind myself on notes. I can barely play anything on the piano. It's just sad.

A couple years ago I decided to change all that. I asked my husband for a guitar for Christmas with the plans to teach myself how to play. That has not been going well. But I also just bought an adapter recently for my keyboard & I've started playing with that a bit. I also volunteered to sing a song for the "special music" at church some time in the new year.

Music is too much a part of me for me to let it go. I'm trying to get it back...piece by piece. Um, no pun intended.

I'm Thankful For...

...the fact that my life appears to be SO busy that I can't keep up with my "thankful" for posts. ::sigh::

November 14th
...my church. Typically when you attend a church there is a small core group of people who do all the behind the scenes work for programs and activities. They are the ones that staff the nursery on Sunday morning or plan a potluck on Saturday night. You know the ones. However, I'm very thankful that my church isn't like this. I would have to say at least half the folks who attend help in some way. Some more than others, but all are involved. It's so nice to see & to not feel like the burden falls directly on to your own shoulders.

November 15th
...my MOPS group. I wasn't able to attend this week & I so missed it! My hubby had our truck & I could not fit all six of us in our little compact car. I'm thankful for the interaction with other moms, for the great fellowship, and for the outreach to unsaved moms. Over half of our moms are unsaved & yet come back week after week - to a church building - to meet with other moms. Even when we talk about God & how to be save - they come back. It's great.

November 16th
...for a nice day spent at home with my boys anticipating Daddy's return home. I spent the day cleaning the trailer from stem to stern. It's shining now. I'm thankful I was able to do that.

November 17th
...a hubby willing to take a late night out on the town with his wife to go see a movie (Fireproof to be exact). He had a lot of work to catch up on after being gone for a week. It would mean his mom being able to watch the kids - late. We tend to not do this often if at all possible because they get up so early to go to work, but she willingly (and immediately) said yes to doing this for us so I'm thankful for my MIL as well. Even though we had to take separate cars (he came straight from work) & even though he went straight home so his mom could go to bed (I stayed in the city to get groceries) it was a great night. The movie is excellent. If you are a local IRL friend, go see it SOON. I'm not sure how long it will be in the local theaters. There were only four couples there last night. I'd love to see it stay.

November 18th
...for my Bible studies. I attend two. One is a Life Transformation Group with one other lady that meets on Tuesday nights at her house just down the road. The second is a couple's Bible study that meets on Wednesday nights. It does mean I'm out of the house three nights in a row (we have AWANA on Thursday nights), but the accountability & study has been nice.

I'm Thankful For...

Yes, I'm behind in my posts. It's just that I've been having a very busy week. So I'll catch it up now.

November 10th

...my hubby.

I should probably say this first & foremost...these thankful posts are in no particular order. Trust me. I am very thankful that my husband is such an amazing provider for our family. When I was pregnant with baby #2 we decided it was time for me to stay home with the children - something we hadn't really ever considered before that time. We went to one income & have struggled to make it work for a number of years. He's never once wavered about me staying home - as long as it was what I wanted. For that I am very thankful. I'm also thankful for what he does now. Four years ago we made the decision to move back to where he grew up. It's a very rural part of the state. There really are no jobs for him in this area so he knew it would mean at least a one hour commute one way for a job - if not longer. He took a job closer to where we used to live & drives at least 2 hours round trip daily. However, this new job requires more travel & some day he spends long days on the road. He never complains about all the travel. He is an amazing provider & I'm so thankful we've had 15 years together so far. I'm praying for many more.

November 11th

...this child.

My middle son. Oh my - what can I say about this little guy. I'm thankful for the joy he brings in to my life every day. He is such an inquisitive child. He has to know how things work and why. Oh yes, he is my why child. He's 7-1/2 and a day still does not go by when I don't get grilled on the "whys" of life. And yes, at times I have told him to just please top because I am "all questioned out." ;-) He makes me think. He makes me laugh. He has unlimitless energy - at least so it seems. He wakes up hungry. The first thing out of his mouth every morning is, "Can I have breakfast?" He makes life fun.

November 12th

...this child.

Oh yes - my baby who is growing up far too fast for my liking. He turns five in January. FIVE! I'm just not sure how that could happen as it seems like just yesterday he was a squalling little (well, okay, he has never been "little") bundle of boy. Our third boy. God certainly has a sense of humor or at least know what I could handle. ;-) This little one is in the midst of trying to figure out how to leave toddler hood behind & be a little boy. He still wants to be mommy's little boy but he is also striving to figure out how to be a "big boy" as well. He struggles with me watching the two babies. He does not like to share me, but it's making him grow in to a better person. He does play with them & it's nice to see him interact with ones younger than he is - he does it very well. He brings so much fun & joy in to our house. He is the most ticklish child I've ever seen. I don't even have to touch him & he will dissolve. We tell him if he didn't have such a great laugh, we wouldn't tickle him so much. I'm so very thankful to have him in my life.

November 13th

...my parents.

I couldn't find a photo of my parents easily on my computer (yes, I need to get my photos in to some semblance of order) but I did find this sign. This is the name of the farm I grew up on. My parents moved to Maine from where they grew up in Massachusetts after getting married & having three children. They moved in to an old run-down farmhouse with no indoor plumbing (can you imagine???) & no running water. They put all that in & had two more babies (myself & my younger sister). Shortly after I was born they were led to Christ by my "Uncle" Bones (and no I can't remember his real name but that is what we called him). I am a second-generation Christian. For that I am very thankful. I'm thankful that my parents are still married after 45 years (or maybe 46...). I'm thankful they raised us in the country on a farm. I am also thankful they opened their hearts to Christ all those years ago.

I'm Thankful For...

...my friend, Deb.

I know I've blogged about my friendship with Deb before, but I thought I'd post a very quick recap.

We met through a homeschool project shortly after I began homeschooling B six years ago. It was called Flat Travelers & was based on the book Flat Stanley. You made paper dolls & sent them off to visit with friends. The dolls visits were documented & then sent back to you. A fun project. Deb was one of the first we did an exchange with. She was just starting to get in to scrapbooking and I was just getting in to homeschooling. We began e-mailing each other & a friendship was born. We've even managed to meet IRL a few times - typically yearly. Sometimes I go out to visit her & her family in New York or they come to Maine for a visit.

But Deb & I also chat in Yahoo Messenger a lot. In fact, we used to have a standing chat time - every Wednesday night at 8pm. Then life got busy. Deb & Brian adopted some more kiddos & life got busy here with extra children and activities.

However, through it all, Deb has been a great friend. Even though a five hour drive separates us, I know that she is there for me any time I need her. Thanks, Deb. Be sure to check out her blog over at Following the Narrow Path.

I'm Thankful For....

....these two friends.

The two in the photo are the ones who I know I can call no matter the reason & they would come running to help if I needed it. They are my sister (in the middle) & Tammy (in pink). We see each other at least once a month & love our get togethers. We never run out of things to talk about. We laugh together. We cry together (if need be). We scrap together. We eat together. We have tons of fun together.

Thanks girls - see you in a week!

I'm Thankful For....

(not my actual doctor's office)
... access to medical care.

I'm thankful that we have medical insurance (even when it's difficult to work with) & I'm very thankful for my doc's office. They added J in at the very end of the day after I told them he had been having fevers for three days but I had no way to get there before 4pm. I had both girls yesterday & didn't have the extra car seat (it was in the car with hubby). They got us in & we found out J has a really bad strep throat. I'm thankful it was diagnosed so quickly. I'm thankful for the small town phamarcy that was able to fill the script for us which saved me an hour round trip drive in to town to get it filled at the chain pharmacy. I'm thankful that J is getting better - I'll know for sure if he doesn't wake up tonight with a nasty fever like he did last night. I'm thankful that I have relatively healthy children.

I'm Thankful For...

...my in-laws.

Four years ago we made the decision to move back to where my hubby grew up. We discussed many options as to where we would live until we could figure out something permanent. It came down to buying a used trailer to set up on the property & staying with my in-laws while we renovated it. We thought it would take about three weeks to make it livable. It took three months.

Most people I'm sure would cringe a little at the thought of living with their in-laws for any amount of time. You've all heard horror stories I'm sure about "the mother-in-law," but I have to tell you. I have fantastic in-laws. Truly.

While it was difficult to manage the three months of blending our household, we survived relatively unscathed. All of us. We now live in a multi-generational setting. We have a quarter-mile long driveway. As you come up the drive you see our trailer (just behind the tree in the foreground) to the left. Then there is the farmhouse. This is the house my hubby's grandfather was born in & still lives in. He's done some amazing renovations there over the years. Just behind the trees on the right you can see the roof of my in-laws log house.

I am very thankful we all get along so well given the proximity of our homes. In fact, I can sometimes go weeks without talking to or seeing my in-laws due to our lives & the busy-ness of it all.

But I'm very thankful we made the decision to move here while our children were still young rather than retire here (which was our original plan). My boys are getting to grow up very close to not only their grandparents but also their great-grandfather. They all have a great relationship with them. I know that we are truly blessed in our living situation.

While it may be unique it really is a blessing for all of us. I'm very thankful I have great in-laws who have made it easy for this all to work. I'm thankful with the time & energy they put in to their grandchildren. I'm thankful for their great-grandfather who just thoroughly enjoys having them around.

I'm Thankful For...

...this child.

My first born son. He's now twelve. He's mere inches away from being taller than I am. I am so thankful I have him in my life. He's going through a season where he is asking for hugs a lot during the day. I make sure to give them whenever he comes up to me with his arms opened wide and says, "Hug!" It's never a question with him. He knows he'll get one. If I'm lucky, I can sneak in a kiss on his forehead too. Because as any 12 year old boy will tell you (or seven year old for that matter), kisses are YUCKY! I'm thankful for B & for his willingness to help me with chores and siblings and toddlers during the day - usually without too much fuss. I'm thankful for him.

Thankful Today

Today I am very thankful to live in a country that allows for democracy & the freedom to vote. I am thankful that I have a voice in who becomes the leader of my country. I am thankful that even if I disagree with who becomes the leader (or you do) we do not have to live in fear for our lives. We do not have to be fearful about showing up to the polls - of being coerced in to voting for a different candidate than who we chose too. I am thankful that this is possible and that fear doesn't override this vote. I am very excited about today - to see its outcome. I know that how ever things end tonight (or tomorrow - hopefully not next week!) that God is in control ultimately & He already knows who is going to win.

So Thankful

Thanksgiving is on the 27th this year. My goal for the month of November is to post something that I am thankful for every day. Obviously I missed the first two days of the month, so I am going to post all of them now.

I am using A 30-Day ThanksGIVING Journal by Sheri Graham to record my thoughts. I'm not sure if I bought it or if it was a free download from somewhere at some point in time, but when I went looking for notebooking pages to use with my boys I found them on my PC. I like them as there is a verse to copy (I'm only giving my boys part of each to do as handwriting is still hard for them, but I'm doing the whole thing in my nicest cursive. ::grin::). Then there is a spot to record something you are thankful for. I love that at the bottom is a spot to record some way to give of yourself that day.

November 1st

Today I am THANKFUL for the freedom to openly praise God without fear of persecution. There are many Christians in other countries who would be killed without a single thought simply because they worship the LORD. Pray for them today.

November 2nd

Today I am THANKFUL for my health, my strength, my stamina, and my endurance. I'm thankful I can complete the tasks I set for myself. Even with a chronic illness, I still have the ability to care for my family and myself.

November 3rd

Today I am THANKFUL for the abundance of food we have here in this country. We can run to the corner store to buy pretty much anything while so many go hungry in this world.

What are you thankful for today?

Virtual Thanks

Today is the last day of the 30 Days of Thanksgiving Challenge. I so enjoyed doing this. I hand wrote notes to most of my blessings & the last batch went out in the mail today.

However, there are a whole slew of "virtual" friends that I felt I needed to thank. Instead of tracking down snail mail addresses, I felt it was pretty appropriate to just publicly thank them here on my blog.

Many years ago, when I first figured out there was a whole virtual world out there, I discovered Yahoo groups. I joined one & found many others there with similar interests to mine. Many were scrapbooking fiends hobbyists like myself. I grew to know them over the years of doing swaps & chatting. Our group expanded & grew. I was even able to meet some of them IRL when I traveled to Pennsylvania for a weekend crop a few times (an 8 hour drive!). A couple years ago Deb & I started a smaller group of those who wanted a smaller group to connect with & wanted to discuss every day aspects of our lives. I include those favorite ladies as well.

So I want to thank Steph, Holly, Monica, Jodi, Deb, Sheri, Christa, Joanne, Linda Mac, Krysandra, Jen, Sharlene, & everyone else at the CSF & CWOLF groups I may have forgotten to mention by name (hmm, this is starting to sound like the Oscars or something! LOL)

Then about two years ago Deb told me about SHS - what a wonderful group that has turned out to be. There are so many great ladies on there. There is knowledge abounding about healthy eating/living, homeschooling, curriculum choices, Christ-like living, and so much more.

I hesitate to "name names" so I'm just going to thank everyone over at SHS. So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, thanks for being a blessing.

I thank my God every time I remember you. ~Philippians 1:3 (NIV)

A Thankfulness Update

I am really enjoying this challenge & I want to thank Beth over at Life with Two Little Vikings for hosting this. I've been having a great time. I have to admit to not managing to send out a note every single day, but I'm doing them in batches. My second batch will be worked on this weekend & I'll probably finish up everyone - maybe. LOL If not, I will get them out by the end of the month.

I've been happy with the response I've been getting. I'm actually writing notes & mailing them out via snail mail for everyone. I've done my sister & another great friend (got great responses from them including admission of tears - LOL). I've sent one to my mom & my MIL. I've also sent to friends near & far. I sent one to my aunt & received back a great e-mail thanking me for the note. I even managed to get one in to my hubby's lunchbox without him realizing it. It made his day & made all the guys he works with jealous. ::grin::

It's been a fun challenge & I'm really enjoying myself!

And if you still have some notes you want to write, I came across this cool link today for "Thankful" cards by Jan Brett! Click here to check them out.

Celebrating Thanksgiving Challenge

This is one of those..."my sister's-boyfriend's-brother's-friend" sort of things that I saw in the blog world. I first noticed it at Deb's blog, Follow the Narrow Path, and followed the links she had back to the original blog here.

Basically it's a really neat way to prepare for Thanksgiving. Basically you make a list of 30 people who have blessed you in some way. Then you go down your list mailing (snail mail, e-mail - whatever) them a thank you - one for each 30 days prior to Thanksgiving. This challenge started on the 24 of October so I'll be doing a bit of catch-up myself.

I don't plan on sharing too much of my list - at this point - we'll see how it all turns out, but I really love how this challenge sounds & I think it's an awesome idea!
